Integrated Energy Planning for Public Housing
Combining public housing asset data and utility planning to identify opportunities for coordinated electrification and better use of infrastructure funding.
For The Boston Foundation, Groundwork Data coordinated an integrated energy planning screening pilot for Massachusetts state-aided public housing. The work brought together housing asset and capital planning data from the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities with gas and electric infrastructure assessments from National Grid and Eversource.
Groundwork Data reviewed building and equipment records, identified complexes facing replacement decisions, and coordinated utility screening of gas infrastructure and electric capacity. The aim was to find places where planned building electrification could avoid gas pipe replacement and make use of available electric capacity.
The project connects equity goals to practical spending decisions: helping limited public housing funds go further while considering costs borne by utility customers. It identified opportunities for further investigation and coordination; the screening was not a site engineering assessment or a commitment to fund or deliver an electrification project.
