Interview 2025
Neighborhood Electrification
An interview with Galen Nelson on coordinating building upgrades and gas retirement, including data needs and cost tradeoffs.
In this April 2025 MassCEC interview, Michael Walsh and Galen Nelson discuss how neighborhoods could move away from gas together. They examine when building upgrades might avoid pipeline replacement and what planners need to know about buildings, gas pipes, and the electric grid.
Walsh walks through street-level scenarios and explains the limits of the comparison: upfront infrastructure costs do not determine future household energy bills. The conversation also covers data access, customer choices, and the practical challenges of coordinating a transition.
